The control drops what it's doing in your main program, sprints off to run a separate subprogram top to bottom, then teleports right back to the exact line it left — like your buddy who steps out to "grab something from the truck" and comes back forty minutes later like nothing happened, except the machine actually comes back on time.
That number is the subprogram getting called — O0005, no mystery, no drama.

A Confession
Somewhere in your job history is a program with the exact same eleven lines pasted six times, back to back, because typing it once felt "easier" than figuring out how to call it as a subprogram. I know this because it's in my job history too. Every machinist has one. It's basically a rite of passage, right before the humbling moment you realize a subprogram would've saved you an hour and a headache. So let's talk about why the smart money calls, instead of copies: Fix the pattern once, and it's fixed everywhere it's called — no hunting down five copies of the same mistake hiding in five different corners of the program. Less typing means less time squinting at a screen at 4:45 on a Friday. Fewer duplicated blocks means fewer places for a typo to hide out and ambush you three parts into a run. A program built from clean subprogram calls actually reads like a program — a story with a beginning, middle, and end — instead of a wall of repeated code that reads like a ransom note nobody wants to translate. And when something does go sideways mid-cycle, you're not searching an entire city for the problem — you already know which neighborhood to check. Do this enough, and you end up with something even better than a clean program: a personal library of subprograms you can just reach for. Every new job gets a little faster to write than the last one. That's not a small thing. That's the difference between a machinist who's still building from scratch in year fifteen, and one who's actually gotten better at his job. |
