You know the guy. Every shop has one. New program loads up, and before anybody can finish the sentence "maybe we should dry run this—" "Put it on 100 and hit GO!" That's not confidence. That's a man volunteering his own toolholder for a lesson he's already flunked once before.
What It Does
Every motion command runs exactly as programmed — except the feed rate gets tossed out the window in favor of a slow, watchable traverse rate. Nothing about part quality gets tested here. Only one question gets an answer: does the machine go where you think it's going, in the order you think it's going there? How To Run One Without Looking Like It's Your First Day
Load the tool you're about to trust with your program's reputation — or better yet, pull it entirely and run empty if all you care about is watching the dance, not the dancer. Don't get comfortable just because you flipped the switch — plenty of controls still spin the spindle and fire coolant during dry run, which is a fun surprise nobody wants. Engage Dry Run. Hit cycle start. And here's the part everybody claims they do and almost nobody actually does: watch it. Not a glance while you check a text. Watch it like the machine owes you money. Keep one hand parked near feed hold the entire time. "I was pretty sure it'd clear" has ended more careers than it's ever saved — say it at your own risk. A dry run exposes exactly what a screen full of code never will — a decimal point hiding in the wrong spot, a rapid move slicing straight through a clamp everybody forgot was still bolted down, a work offset aimed at the wrong corner of the part entirely. None of it jumps out reading top to bottom. All of it jumps out the second you watch the machine actually go there. Dry Run Is Not A Force Field
Tool offsets are still fully loaded and fully believed by the control; a bad offset sends the tool to a bad spot whether you're dry running or not. Not every control slows rapids the same way, so know your specific machine before you assume everything's crawling along safely. A loaded tool plus a badly wrong Z value is still very much a collision looking for a place to happen — dry run buys you a warning, not immunity. And the most dangerous dry run of all isn't the first one. It's the tenth clean one in a row, right when everybody's eyes have quietly wandered somewhere else. |
