A Few Basic Parameters Worth Knowing
Small Numbers, Big Consequences

You don't need to memorize the manual. You need to know the handful that actually shape how the machine behaves day to day.

Cutter Comp: Radius vs. Diameter

A bit-controlled parameter (commonly #5004.2 on many controls) flips whether the WEAR offset column expects a radius value or a full diameter value. Get this backwards on a new-to-you machine and every cutter comp move is off by exactly half of what you expected.

Rapid Traverse Rate

Sets the machine's maximum rapid speed. Shops often dial this down temporarily during break-in on a rebuilt axis or a brand-new machine, then forget to bring it back up — quietly leaving cycle time on the table for months.

Feedrate Override Limits

Caps how far an operator can push the override dial past 100%. Useful for protecting a marginal setup or an inexperienced operator from overriding their way into a crash.

Stored Stroke Check (Soft Limits)

The software-enforced travel boundaries that stop an axis before it hits the hard mechanical stop. These get revisited any time a fixture, tombstone, or tooling changes the usable envelope of the machine.

None of these require deep expertise to understand. They just require knowing they exist — most machinists go years without ever looking.
